As a special educator, my goal is to guide my students toward becoming independent and self-confident learners who can achieve their academic and personal lifetime goals. Initially, I assess their foundational skills so that I can help them to develop competency in areas such as number sense, phonemic awareness and executive functioning. Students may also receive assistance with classroom assignments and projects. I enjoy getting to know each student’s unique personality, interests and learning style and working closely with parents, teachers and para-educators to ensure success. Be sure to contact me if you have concerns or information that will help us make sure your child has a positive experience in school every day. When possible, I check my email frequently.
CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE:
I earned a bachelor’s degree with a dual major in education and psychology at Washington University in St. Louis and achieved certification in five areas. My career as a special education case manager began in Rochester, NH where I traveled between four elementary schools. I went on to develop the first resource room program for students from Newfields and Stratham, NH. Later, I worked as a special educator in Milton and New Durham. I taught in self-contained classrooms covering grades 1 through 8 for the Strafford Learning Center. While working on my master’s
degree, I tutored teen-aged girls at the Dover Children’s Home, served as a Chapter I tutor for SAU #50 and provided counseling through Dover Adult Learning Center. I earned a master’s degree in education through the counseling program at UNH. Currently, I am certified in Guidance Counseling, General Special Education and Specific Learning Disabilities. When my two children, Sarah and Tommy, were infants, I spent some time at home, and then taught half time until my son was in first grade. Wishing to return to teaching full time, I accepted the position of inclusion specialist at Rye Elementary School in 2001. I enjoyed working with the excellent staff and outstanding students of RES until last
spring, when I chose to move up with the fifth grade class to Rye Junior High. Although I miss RES, it has been a smooth transition, and I am excited about being a part of all the amazing things that go on at RJH.
INTERESTS:
In my spare time I enjoy spending time reading, painting, walking on the beach, kayaking or cross country skiing. I also enjoy my work as coordinator of my church food pantry.
